Payroll Officer

We are seeking a highly motivated and organised individual who is able to work on their own initiative and has the ability to communicate at all levels. Duties will include the following:

  • Initial set up of PAYE schemes for new payrolls with HMRC
  • The set up and maintenance of payroll records, and the processing to individual client payroll deadlines. Filing RTI for client payrolls in accordance with their pay dates.
  • Implementing pension deductions for client payrolls & an understanding of the concept of pre-tax and post-tax deductions.
  • Processing BACS payroll payments by various means e.g. telephone & fax.
  • Supporting clients with their payroll & SAGE queries.
  • Supporting other payroll staff and covering their holiday/absence.
  • Preparing example figures for individual scenarios of gross & net pays.
  • Dealing with payroll corrections/amendments in the correct manner for RTI records.
  • Reconciling the payroll records on a monthly basis & preparation of the Annual Returns/P60s & the Final Submissions for the Year.
  • Typing letters to accompany payroll reports, together with those required for HMRC, DWP & CSA, etc.
  • Implementation of Auto Enrolment legislation. Ensuring that clients are compliant in advance of clients’ staging dates. Setting up of AE records within AE Exchange and Smart portals, calculating deductions for pay & transferring the data to payroll, uploading files between AE Exchange and Smart. Dealing with the queries re the success/failure of data transmissions & employee queries. Learning alternative AE provisions for those clients using other providers. Meeting the deadlines for the issue of correspondence, payments in respect of pension contributions, completing the Declaration of Compliance in accordance with The Pension Regulator rules.

  • Using knowledge to support the processing of payrolls, and client enquiries. Advising re SPP, SMP, SSP, Childcare Vouchers, and other salary sacrifice schemes (& letters for addendum to contracts), and Annual Holiday Entitlements.
  • Involvement in fees negotiations for new payrolls, and annually updating fees for existing ones. Raising fee notes/bills.
  • Download HMRC notices from the gateway.
  • The mandatory learning of new legislation & skills required which affect payroll ongoing, e.g. HMRC changes to the calculation of pay, NMW, RTI and Auto Enrolment. Also changes to the SAGE software when upgrades are implemented.

The successful candidate should be experienced in the use of Sage payroll software as well as Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook. Training will be provided in respect of other software packages. The candidate should also have excellent communication skills and telephone manner, and be able to work well under deadline pressure, prioritising effectively.

Salary and package will be commensurate to experience.


Assistant Accountant / Senior Accountant

We are currently seeking to recruit an outgoing, highly motivated and experienced individual, who is ideally AAT qualified (or qualified by experience), to join our friendly team in the Nuneaton Office.

This role is a full-time position, but part time or job share will be considered for the right candidates.

Job Description

This is a client facing role that involves day-to-day account management and on-going business support to your own portfolio of clients; the candidate will therefore possess excellent communication skills and must have previous experience of working within an accountancy practice in a similar role.

This is an autonomous role; you will report to the Manager and Partner directly but will largely be left to deal with your own time management and prioritisation.

You will be mainly responsible for preparing statutory accounts and corporation tax returns for owner managed business clients, completion of management accounts as well as providing on-going business advice and support to clients and helping colleagues.

With a strong emphasis on providing timely and proactive accountancy services in a friendly and approachable manner, as you will be required to carry out the following tasks with confidence and professionalism;

Key Responsibilities

  • Managing a portfolio of owner managed businesses
  • Liaising with and answering client queries by phone, email and face to face
  • On-boarding new clients and introducing them to the cloud software
  • Preparation and posting of Journals
  • Preparing and production of statutory using specialist software
  • Maintaining client fixed asset register and provision schedules
  • Preparation and analysis of Monthly Management and P&L analysis reports for clients
  • Advise clients on basic tax efficiency measures
  • Develop long lasting and personable client relationships
  • Communicating with HMRC on behalf of clients
  • Registering client companies for VAT
  • Create and maintain client files on internal systems
  • Internal reporting preparation to support the Partner
  • Answer and field general calls

Skills and experience

  • Qualified AAT or equivalent
  • Have a minimum of 2 years accountancy practice experience within a similar accounting role (we will not consider applications from candidates with only industry experience)
  • Experience using online accounting packages, ideally including Xero.
  • Possess excellent communication skills (both oral & written), to include an excellent telephone manner
  • Possess strong IT skills, including MS Office applications

This is a client facing role that involves day-to-day assistance with client bookkeeping work using Xero and associated cloud-base APPS; the candidate will therefore possess excellent communication skills and must have previous experience of working within an accountancy practice, or in Industry in a similar role.

This is an autonomous role; you will report to the Manager and Partner directly but will largely be left to deal with your own time management and prioritisation with a keen eye on monthly reporting deadlines.

You will be mainly responsible for completing bookkeeping tasks, including face to face meetings and assistance to local business owners, ensuring statutory deadlines are met as well as providing assistance to the Accounts Team in preparing statutory accounts and corporation tax returns for owner managed business clients as well as providing on-going support to colleagues.

With a strong emphasis on providing timely and proactive accountancy services in a friendly and approachable manner, as you will be required to carry out the following tasks with confidence and professionalism;
