From April 2026, HMRC requires all sole traders and most landlords to follow new rules under Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax (MTD ITSA).
Under Making Tax Digital, HMRC requires affected taxpayers to keep digital records, submit quarterly updates to HMRC and use MTD-compatible software.
HMRC is phasing MTD ITSA based on gross income (not profit).
The mandated groups are:
- From 6th April 2026 – individuals with qualifying income over £50,000
- From 6th April 2027 – those with income £30,000 – £49,999
- From 6th April 2028 – sole traders and landlords – over £20,000
Partnerships and limited companies are not included at this stage.
Instead of filing just one tax return each year, you will need to:
- Keep your records digitally throughout the year
- Submit quarterly updates summarising your income and expenses
- And complete an end-of-year declaration
Remember, MTD is based on gross income, not profit.
