Following on from our earlier post “A Glimpse into the History of Burgis & Bullock”, we’ve been reflecting on some more of the stories shared by Evelyn, who worked alongside him.
As a Burgis & Bullock team member today, it was touching to hear how many of the values we hold close were already present in our earliest legacy.
Evelyn told us how the department store offered its own version of credit – allowing trusted customers to “buy now and pay later”, something quite forward-thinking at the time. Whilst we are inundated with by credit companies seeking our business in today’s world this was just not the case in the 1950s. Mr. Burgis took this opportunity to make his store unique and appealing with this offer of trust. He made sure to maintain these so important customer relationships and would always personally follow up with the individuals to ensure payment was received.
Evelyn remembered how he valued genuine interaction with both staff and customers with this action leaving a lasting impression.
It’s easy to think of this as just a quaint story from the past – but it’s more than that. It speaks to what Mr. Burgis stood for: a people-first approach to business, built on trust, empathy, and strong relationships. He understood the importance of getting to know people.
That same spirit still guides us at Burgis & Bullock today. Whether we’re helping clients navigate complex decisions, manage their finances, or plan for the future, we believe exceptional service begins with understanding clients’ businesses as well as the individuals behind them, their challenges and their ambitions. And we always love to hear where you’re off to on holiday, what’s on the menu for dinner, or how your weekend went, too.
Because when you build real connections, you can offer advice that’s not just sound – but genuinely meaningful.
That’s how Mr. Burgis worked then, and it’s how we continue to work today.
Evelyn has been so kind to share more of her memories so do look out for more glimpses into our history coming soon.
